Chapter Thirty Seven

We had quite a shock! As we were getting dressed this morning we realized that all our teddy bears had disappeared!  Their cradle was empty!  We looked at all the places that we leave them and there wasn't one teddy bear in our rooms. We were quite worried and then we remembered hearing them sing the teddy bear song a couple of days ago. I remembered some of the words.

"If you go out in the woods today,
You're sure of a big surprise
If you go out in the woods today,
You better go in disguise
For every bear that ever there was
Will gather there for certain, because
Today's the day
The teddy bears have their picnic."

We hoped they hadn't gone far. Some of them are so little. After we thought about it for a bit we decided we would go out in the woods and try to find them. HittyBelle spoke up and said if we were going out in the woods we would need a disguise just as the words of the song suggested. She remembered some masks that Esther had printed and so she got one and tried it on and gave another one to Hitty Carol. I remembered a mask we had that looked like the ones in Venice and decided to wear it.

We looked in the wooded area in the backyard first and there they were!  We went into the woods as quietly as we could but all the twigs under our feet kept making sounds. It wasn't long until our teddy bears saw us! We didn't know if they were going to ask us to leave or what was going to happen. There were some larger strange bears we had never seen and we didn't know exactly how friendly they would be. Of course, I have always been under the impression that all teddy bears are friendly so I wasn't too worried. I don't know when our teddy bears had made friends with them but they all did seem to know one another. That too could be something peculiar to teddy bears.

We could see that they had a lot of food to eat. There were jars of honey, peanut butter sandwiches and a tray of watermelon. I do believe there were some hamburgers but I didn't see any fire for the teddy bears to have cooked them. Maybe they had a caterer bring them in. Our little ones were sitting right up in the front and even one of the tiny ones had gotten up on the table itself!

In a few minutes they spotted us and invited us to join them. We went closer so we could visit a bit better but didn't think we should join them at the table even though they did offer to share their food. They looked like they were having such a good time that we said our good byes and told them we would be waiting for them at home when the picnic was over. Before we left I noticed some pretty colored balls so I assume they would also get to play some games. Our little teddy bears looked so happy to be there and I know they will have tales to tell us later.
