Chapter Two Hundred Sixty Three
Oh how quickly peace and quiet can be broken! Grandma Alice, Becassine and I were enjoying a mid-morning treat when Hitty Colleen and Hitty Sue came rushing and announced that they had just seen little chicks next door. Michael bolted for the door and was on his way!
Indeed there were the cutest little chicks running about in the yard over by the chicken coop. This time Michael was sure he would be able to catch one. He had not been successful when previously he had chased the full size chickens.
Grandma Alice thought it more prudent to pick up one of the chicks and explain to Michael that little chicks were delicate and if one did hold one, to handle it carefully. She remembered how as a child she enjoyed watching little chicks and how soft they were when she touched them..
Michael learned quickly and spent the rest of the morning trying to catch various chicks. After awhile it got very quiet in the yard and Michael had disappeared. That was cause for concern. Also, one of the chicks was missing.
Hitty Colleen heard a commotion in the playhouse and upon investigation found Michael and one of the chicks. Perhaps it had enough 'play time' and was trying to hide.
Later in the day, the little ones coaxed a couple of the chicks over to our yard to play but this time, under supervision. Ima stayed with them to make sure all went well and no little chick would come to harm. I suspect this won't be the only day one of us will have to be on duty. Hmmm, I wonder how long does it take for a chick to become a full size chicken?
