Chapter Two Hundred Eighty Five
We are back home from one of the most wonderful, exiting trips I can remember! Oh what fun we had. It was time spent with many of our Hitty friends. We had looked forward to this event for over a year and it turned out to be everything we had hoped it would be.
First we traveled to Burlington, Vermont going through the Adirondack Mountains to visit the Shelburne Museum. It is truly a fascinating place! The shuttle bus took us around the 45 acre estate and we could get off and visit any of the many buildings, each housing slices of American history. Grandma Alice was particularly fond of the Stencil House since the room she shares with Becassine is also stenciled.
A stop for lunch gave us a chance to visit with others. Hitty Holly Porter, Hitty Sparrow Maxwell and Hitty Colleen found the crayons and made use of the large white sheets of paper covering the tables.
Next on the agenda was a trip to Sutton, Canada . Going through the border gates into another country is always a bit unnerving but we didn't have any problems. Everyone sighed with relief!
We checked into the Auberge West Brome lodge that is surrounded by beautiful scenery. A truly lovely place to stay, fireplaces and decks for all. It was so comfortable, we almost didn't want to leave our room. An added bonus of the whole trip was that the weather was just the way we like it.
Then came one of the most exciting parts – a visit to the home of our hosts, "Art to Play With". Each Hitty family had brought gifts and it was like Christmas in September! Each received a little shop and everyone’s imagination ran wild as to how it could be used.
We spent the entire afternoon opening presents, visiting with one another and then watched as rugs were silk screened to take home to paint. I wish I could convey in writing all the excitement.
The next day started with shopping in the delightful little town on Sutton. Little shops with goodies of all kinds. In the afternoon the ladies and we Hittys went to high tea in the nearby village of Frelighsburg. Proper manners were put to use.
Five courses of tiny delectable sandwiches and cookies were served with different teas. I think the favorite was the Russian winter tea. The whole thing was topped off with a dessert with many different flavors. Grandma Alice and Hitty Kate could not take their eyes off it!
Back at our host's home, Grandma Alice finally had a chance to visit with Mamie in her kitchen. This was the reason she came along on the trip. She was fascinated with all the different cooking utensils and pottery. The two ladies enjoyed comparing their very different methods of cooking among other things..
There were so many happenings and details of this trip that I could be writing forever. We have memories to last a lifetime. To read more and see pictures, please go to "A Visit with Hitty". There are three segments so don’t miss any of them! http://hittyjean.wordpress.com
The Robertson Hittys want to thank all the participants for their gifts and most of all, their friendship!
